New Moon in Sagittarius: “Choice at the Crossroads”
The new moon today happens in the sign of Sagittarius. Also a solar eclipse, this lunation culminates the last six months and initiates the next six. It also marks a moment in time that we circle back to every year when the Moon meets the Sun in Sagittarius. I asked the Runes what healing looks like for this time cycle and they emphasized the power of choice.
Destruction and drastic change enter us into brand new territory. As old structures are falling and failing all around us, we find ourselves at a threshold. Many roads are suddenly open. When standing at any crossroads, healing looks like exercising the power to choose proactively.
These five runes show a bold, decisive action that comes from a place of deep alignment - tapping in to instinct and intuition, following the internal compass to navigate new territory and clear space for the biggest, brightest, most authentic versions of our selves.
Thurisaz (center) is the thorn, hammer or axe, the principle of breaking through barriers with force. Invoking courage, confidence and personal power, Thurisaz is the vital life force that keeps our hearts beating and reminds us we always have free will.
Hagalaz (below) is the storm, hail or destruction and Gebo (above) is the crossroads, exchange or gift. Together they show the opportunity in destruction - the opening up of new roads and possibilities. Shuffling the deck to start a new round. This is a warning not to hesitate at the threshold, considering options for too long - healing in this situation is making a proactive choice and believing in ourselves enough to move in that direction.
How can we trust ourselves to take decisive action? Ehwaz (left) is the Yew or Tree of Life, tapped into internal sources below and above, the dream and subconscious realms. When connected to the deepest levels of intuition and highest modes of understanding, even the most impulsive decisions are in alignment. Sowilo (right) is the Sun - light radiating from the inside out - invoking the principle of wholeness, just being. The Thorn’s decisive action is backed by The Yew Tree’s depth of feeling and faces the Sun’s pure expression of self. When we are listening to the gut and the third eye, our movements become healing nourishment. When we move towards our most authentic self, our decisions are guided and protected.
I sat down to draw a bindrune and first I drew The Yew Tree and then I crossed it with The Sun. They fit together like two puzzle pieces, condensing into a very simple diamond. Looking closer, I realized that all the other runes in the spread are also present in this shape - four Thorns facing each other in the center, the Crossroads and the Storm both appearing if the diamond is tilted to the side. The simplicity and symmetry of their combination feels so simple and pure. This is the principle of being fully centered in the present moment, able to take decisive action in any direction from a place of alignment and wholeness.
